A search of this term online led to a description from the Causes of Death in the Late 19th Century mentioned in the Register of Deaths 1893-1907 from a page by Karin L. Flippin which describes it this way: Cholera Infantium - a disease of infants prevailing in Summer and characterized by vomiting, uncontrollable diarrhea and collapse. The predisposing cause appears to be the hot weather. It is especially fatal in large cities.3-5 Freddie Clankie, 71 (October 18, 1920-July 26, 1992) (A 1940s photo of Freddie Clankie. Photo courtesy of Reva Clankie) Roy Clankie was the only one of Albert and Leota's children that I actually remember. Roy and his wife Reva lived in Shirland, Illinois (as did many of my relatives at that time) in a box shaped two story green brick house in the 70s and my family used to visit them from time to time. For some reason, I can remember once eating peanut butter sandwiches there. My brother and I along with a couple other cousins used to call them Aunt Reva and Uncle Roy though they were a couple generations separated from our line. I also remember two of their children despite a pretty good age difference, David and Curtis. Mary was born in Chana in July of 1928 to Beatrice and Lloyd Mediar. Her mother was a homemaker and her father was a factory worker and farmer. They had four children, two girls, Mary & Nellie and two boys, Clyde and Lloyd. The family moved often to different areas of Ogle County. Mary attended school in Mt. Morris, school was something she did not like. Sewing and cooking were her favorite things to do. All she ever wanted when she grew up was to get married, have a family and live happily ever after. Mary met her husband Clifford at the roller skating rink at the coliseum in Oregon. They had five children. Their daughter Marilyn was born mentally handicapped, she also had polo as a child. Mary took care of her until she died at the age of 40 from cancer. Her daughter Mary says; “Mom spent her whole life taking care of people. She used to be a wonderful seamstress, made all our bread and took in families and/or children that needed someplace to go or were troubled.” Mary cleaned homes, took in ironing, cooked at Pinecrest and Yellow Bird and lived in facilities where she cooked, cleaned and took others to the store, doctor etc. Mary loves the outdoors, plants, animals and small children, she has fifteen grandchildren. Christmas was a favorite holiday when the whole family got together. If you had a chance, what advise would you give the world? “Enjoy life and not work so hard, live passes too quickly.” Mary was a very caring and giving person, and worked hard most of her life. Here at Neighbor’s she can sit back and enjoy all the activities that we offer, have Coffee Clutch serve her on Thursday’s, and receive the care that she once gave so lovingly to others. Stop and speak to Mary and have her give you her sunshine smile. Mary you are our July Resident in the News.
