The Last lecture was presided over by Professor. Naoki Yoshida at the Center for Language Studies.
He introduced that Prof. Takai is not only a specialist of English teaching, but also a maestro of folk songs.
Then, Professor Tateo Wada, the vice president of the OUC, introduced Prof. Takai’s personal histories.
Prof. Takai started working at OUC over 30 years ago, in August 1982.
At that time, the Center for Language Studies has not founded yet, so he was hired as an assistant of the Department of Commerce.
1982 was the same year as Fuji TV network's long-running comedy program “Waratte Iitomo!” has started broadcasting.
He has supported OUC for such a long time!
The title of his last lecture was “Cultural Awareness.”
In the lecture, participants were divided into 9 groups with at least one or a few International students.
And of course, the lecture was run entirely in English.
First, he told that there are many cultural differences in each country.
For example, holding up a pinky can be interpreted as a girlfriend in Japan, but this gesture does not mean anything in other countries!
I didn't know that!
In the lecture, I learned two things in order to enhance cultural awareness.
One is the activity to distinguish between “Description” and “Interpretation.”
Another is the activity to quantify the degree of cultural awareness.
Both activities were difficult for me, but they were really fun!
I learned that it is important to enhance cultural awareness; thinking from their point of view rather than thinking from my point of view.
At the end of the lecture, he performed a local folk song named“Esashi Oiwake.”
Everyone was fascinated by his beautiful voice!
After the last lecture, bouquets of flowers were presented from the staffs at the Center for Language Studies.
Dear Professor. Osamu Takai,
I appreciate your hard work for 27 years at Otaru University of Commerce.
Best wishes for your next life!
