授業の目的・方法 /Course Objectives and method |
English learners often make a mistake with tense marking. The tense system in English is ``absolute" in that the past events are always marked with the past tense while languages such as Japanese have been said to have ``relative" tense marking---the past events are not always marked past. In this course, we will analyze tense marking in relation with aspects in English and other languages.
達成目標 /Course Goals |
We will understand the tense system in English in comparison with other languages. Students will be able to represent the meaning of tenses semantically and syntactically.
授業内容 /Course contents |
We will start with the selected portions of Comrie (2008) and overview the tense system in various languages. Then we will move on Tense Logic and Reichenbach (1947) explained in Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. After considering syntactic structures (Stowell 1981), we will move on to Neo-Davidsonian Event Semantics (Parsons 1990) and analyze sequence of tense phenomena.
