授業の目的・方法 /Course Objectives and method |
This is a course in the basics of language testing. The focus of the course this semester will focus largely on two distinct areas of assessment that will be relevant to high school and junior high school teachers. The first is classroom assessment in its various forms. The second is item development and high stakes testing, such as that found in entrance exams at the junior and senior high school level. | ||
達成目標 /Course Goals |
It is hoped that by the end of this course, students will be able to do the following. 1. Understand the basics of classroom evaluation techniques. 2. Be able to put into practice the techniques learned in the course. 3. Be capable of recognizing both good and poor item development on their tests. 4. Understand the importance of validity and reliability in high stakes testing, and the measures that can be used to ensure that both occur at a high level. 5. Understand and recognize the importance of fairness measures in testing and be able to follow widely recognized guidelines. |

事前学修・事後学修 /Preparation and review class |
Students should read ahead of the class. And before going on to the next reading, students should review any parts which may have been unclear after the first reading or the lecture in the class. Following each class, students should review the main points of the lecture and any areas they didn't fully understand. Homework will be given as necessary to demonstrate the points made in the lessons. |

履修上の注意事項 /Remarks |
This class will be mainly face to face. Office hour: 12-12:50 Thursdays, by appointment. This is a course mainly designed for students of the graduate school teacher training program in linguistics/applied linguistics/literature. The course is also open to 3rd and 4th year students who plan to become English teachers in junior or senior high school in the future. Those students should contact the professor (shawn@res.otaru-uc.ac.jp) to express their interest before registering. As this is a course that requires a lot of background in teaching, it is not recommended for students of other majors. Any non-major student considering taking this course must contact the professor for permission prior to registering for the course. |
