授業の目的・方法
/Course Objectives and method
Course Objectives:

This course serves as an introduction to contrastive linguistics, with a strong emphasis on theoretical approaches. It is designed for students with no previous coursework in formal language study. The course has three major objectives:

1. Understand Linguistics Basics: Through lectures, students will become acquainted with the core concepts and terminology of modern linguistics, laying the groundwork for advanced studies.

2. Analyze Languages: Students will engage in theoretical analysis of languages, primarily focusing on Japanese and English, while also considering the analysis of other languages.

3. Explore Current Research: Through reading and discussing scholarly articles, students will delve into contemporary research, broadening their understanding of contrastive linguistics.


Course Method:

The course will utilize lectures for the foundational teaching of key concepts and theories in contrastive linguistics. Comparative language exercises and discussions on selected research papers will complement these lectures, offering practical insights and encouraging critical analysis of the latest scholarly developments.

Upon successfully completing this course, students will:

1. Master Fundamental Linguistic Concepts: Students will have a solid understanding of the core principles, theories, and terminology of linguistics, as introduced through lectures.

2. Hone Theoretical Analysis Skills: Through engaging with comparative language exercises and discussions on scholarly articles, students will develop the ability to apply theoretical frameworks to analyze linguistic data.

Class 1: Introduction: What is (contrastive) linguistics?
Classes 2–6: Syntax (the study of how phrases and sentences larger than the word are constructed)
Classes 7–11: Phonology (the study of the organization of language sounds.)
Classes 12–14: Morphology (the study of the make-up of words.)
Class 15: Presentation

Research Paper Discussions
- Students will be responsible for preparing to guide the discussion on selected research papers. This preparation will involve a thorough analysis of the paper and the formulation of discussion points to engage your classmates.

Final paper and presentation: 40%

- There will be a small number of problem sets assigned throughout the course.
- Each student will be required to present one paper in class and lead discussions.
- The final paper will be an original paper or critical review of a published paper.

Your final grade will be based on the total score:

A(秀): 100-90 
Excellent performance on the requirements of the class
B(優): 89-80
Good performance on the requirements of the class
C(良): 79-70
Acceptable performance on the requirements of the class
D(可): 69-60
Minimally acceptable performance on the requirements of the class
F(不可): 59-0
Unacceptable performance on the requirements of the class

1. The material will be cumulative, and it will be difficult for anyone who gets behind to catch up. Thus, attending class and doing all the exercises is important and essential.

2. If you are planning to take this course, make sure you come to the first class to understand the required level of study. Make sure that you talk with the instructor if you (have to) miss it.

3. This course is conducted either in Japanese or English.

4. The course schedule and course contents are subject to change depending on the needs of the students and the size of the class.
