| 授業の目的・方法 ／Course Objectives and method |
The human language allows us to communicate using abstract meanings using various symbols, such as speech, sign, or images. To facilitate the communication in English as a foreign language, it is helpful to know how the human language as a system of meanings help us communicate efficiently. In this course, the student will be introduced to the basic concepts of semantics (the study of meanings) and pragmatics (the study of discourse). | ||

The student is invited to read more on semantics and pragmatics if interested, in which case the instructor will be glad to help during the office hours and/or via e-mail. | ||

| 成績評価の方法 ／Grading |
The student will be expected to participate actively during each class, which will count for 60% of the total grade. Per each class, an attendance with at least one question or comment made during the class yields 1 point. A particularly active participation allows an additional point and the student receives 2 points. An absence or total silence during the class leads to 0 point. An absence for a justifiable reason will not be counted, provided that the student reports their reason to the instructor. The midterm and the final exam will both count for 20% of the total grade. |
