授業の目的・方法
/Course Objectives and method
This course provides an introduction to phonetics, the study of sound systems, with a particular focus on English in comparison to Japanese. Students will learn about the mechanisms of articulation for vowels and consonants in English and Japanese. Additionally, students will become familiar with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and use it to transcribe English and Japanese words and phrases.
達成目標
/Course Goals
By the end of this course, students will have gained a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms used to produce English and Japanese sounds and will be able to accurately transcribe them using the IPA.

Class 1 Introduction
Classes 2-4 Articulation and Acoustics
Classes 5-8 Phonology and Phonetic Transcription
Classes 9-11 The Consonants of English
Classes 12-13 English Vowels
Classes 14 Variations and Sound Changes in English
Class 15 Japanese Consonants and Vowels

/Preparation and review class
After every class, review all materials discussed there within the same day. Do not postpone your review. Use manaba for questions and discussions so that you share your thoughts with others.

This course does not require a textbook. Instead, lectures and discussions will be based on handouts prepared by the instructor.

/Grading Criteria
Your final grade will be based on the total score:

A(秀): 100-90 
Excellent performance on the requirements of the class
B(優): 89-80
Good performance on the requirements of the class
C(良): 79-70
Acceptable performance on the requirements of the class
D(可): 69-60
Minimally acceptable performance on the requirements of the class
F(不可): 59-0
Unacceptable performance on the requirements of the class
履修上の注意事項
/Remarks
1. If you are planning to take this course, make sure you come to the first class to understand the required level of study. Make sure that you talk with the instructor if you (have to) miss it.

2. The material will be cumulative, and it will be difficult for anyone who gets behind to catch up. Thus, attending class and doing all the exercises is important and essential.

3. The lectures are given in Japanese. However, the handouts are almost all in English.
