授業の目的・方法 /Course Objectives and method |
This course offers an introduction to lexical semantics, which studies native speakers’ knowledge of word meaning. For instance, native speakers of English intuitively know that the sentences in (1) and (2) may describe the same event: (1) Fido broke the bowl. (2) Fido hit the bowl. However, they recognize (3) as acceptable, whereas (4) is not: (3) The bowl broke. (4) *The bowl hit. Similarly, for Japanese speakers, (5) appears odd, but (6) is deemed acceptable. (5) *歩いて山にあがる。 (6) 歩いて山にのぼる。 This course seeks to address questions such as: What role do the semantic components (i.e., meanings) of words play in these distinctions? And how can we formally represent these components? By using formal semantic tools such as propositional calculus, predicate calculus, lambda calculus, type theory, sets and functions, we will explore the complexities of knowledge of word meanings. A particular emphasis is placed on the examination of major lexical categories such as verbs, nouns, and adjectives in English and Japanese. Students will thus develop the analytical skills essential for conducting scientific research in word meaning, setting the stage for further investigation in the field. Key components of the course include: • Lectures: To introduce and elaborate on fundamental concepts and theories within lexical semantics. • Reading Assignments: Students will engage with critical readings and are encouraged to post their questions and comments for further discussion. • Problem Sets: Practical exercises on lexical semantics will be provided to reinforce learned concepts and theories. • Final Research Paper: Encourages students to conduct original research on a topic related to lexical semantics, culminating in a comprehensive paper that showcases their understanding and findings. |

達成目標 /Course Goals |
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: • Understand the fundamental concepts of lexical semantics. • Learn to analyze the meaning of words using basic semantic tools. • Compare and contrast lexical phenomena in English and Japanese. • Apply semantic analysis to real-world linguistic data. |
