授業の目的・方法
/Course Objectives and method
This course aims to develop English discussion and presentation skills by considering information related to the development and current state of the English language.

/Course Goals
By the end of this course students should be able to:
a) Explain academic ideas in English in formal presentations and to partners in small groups.
b) Understand the main principles and issues which we talk about in class.
c) Carry out 2 small research projects on class themes.
授業内容
/Course contents
* Each week, students exchange ideas about English language and culture. This is followed by discussions of the issues using handouts prepared by the teacher.
* During the course, students will also give informal and formal presentations to their classmates.

2. English as a Lingua Franca - How English is used across the globe
3. Language Families - Where did English come from?
4. How did English develop? - Loanwords in English
5. Dictionaries and corpuses
6. What is standard English?
7. Presentation 1
8. Good and Bad English - Written English
9. Good and Bad English - Spoken English
10. Types of English - dialects, accents and registers
11. New Developments in the English Language through the Internet and social media
12. Global Englishes - varieties of native English (UK v US)
13. Global Englishes - English as a second language
14. Language and identity
15. Presentation 2
16. Final Test

/Preparation and review class
* Read materials from the course textbook.
* Research language topics and gather data for class presentations
* Write reports on class presentations.

Presentation 1 & Report - 40%
Presentation 2 & Report - 40%
Final Test - 20%
成績評価の基準
/Grading Criteria
Written reports will be graded and returned to students by the following class. The reports are graded as follows:
* How well the essay answers the essay topic
* English fluency and accuracy
* Persuasiveness of the argument
* How well the essay conforms to academic writing conventions.

Presentations will be graded and feedback will be given to students by the following class. Presentations are graded as follows:
* Successful completion of research task.
* English fluency & accuracy
* Organisation of the content (how coherent and coherence)
* Presentation skills - persuasiveness and use of visual aids.

* The medium of instruction of this course is English, including  class discussions and written work. All class materials are written in English.
