授業の目的・方法
/Course Objectives and method
This course is best suited to students who have little to no experience with the TOEFL iBT test. The primary aim of this course is to help students raise their TOEFL iBT test scores. Students will familiarize themselves with the TOEFL iBT test format and question types, learn more vocabulary from the Academic Word List, and acquire useful test-taking strategies.

Students will practice a short speech expressing their opinion on a given statement in every class once they have learned what to do in the independent speaking task in TOEFL iBT test.
In weeks 5-12 students will learn question types and strategies and practice questions from reading, writing, listening and speaking sections using the course textbook.

Upon completing this course, students will be able to:
• Recognise and use more academic words on the Academic Word List.
• Extract information from texts, conversations, and lectures in the TOEFL iBT test more appropriately
• Make more appropriate written and oral responses in the TOEFL iBT test  
• Employ test-taking strategies for the TOEFL iBT test more effectively

Week 1: Orientation; course information
Week 2: Understanding the TOEFL iBT test
Week 3: Vocabulary - Academic Word List
Week 4: Vocabulary - Academic Word List & Speaking (independent task)
Weeks 5-6: Reading section – question types, strategies and practice questions
Weeks 7-8: Listening section – question types, strategies and practice questions
Weeks 9-11: Writing section – question types, strategies and practice questions
Weeks 11-12: Speaking section (Integrated task)
Week 13: TOEFL mock test (Reading)
Week 14: Speaking test (independent task)
Week 15 In class timed writing test (independent task)

事前学修・事後学修
/Preparation and review class
There will be pre-lesson tasks (homework) for every class. It is important to come to class prepared so that learning is effective. Please check manaba frequently and keep yourselves up to date with the latest information on homework and assignments.

Students are expected to review the materials covered in class, and there will be homework. They are required to work on vocabulary repeatedly throughout the course.

成績評価の方法
/Grading
This course is assessed internally only. Your final grade is based on outcomes of the following assessments:
• Active class participation (e.g., homework completion, engagement in learning activities, volunteering questions and answers) 10%
• Assignments (writing, vocabulary flash cards and examples) 30% (10% x 3)
• Academic vocabulary quizzes 20% (5% x 4)
• Speaking test 20%
• In class writing test 20%

A (Excellent): 100 - 90
B (Very good): 89 - 80
C (Good): 79 - 70
D (Satisfactory): 69 - 60
F (Unsatisfactory): 59 – 0
履修上の注意事項
/Remarks
 All classes will be held face-to-face on campus unless otherwise instructed.  
 Students are required to attend at least two thirds of classes to pass the course. In the event of absence from a class, e-mail the teacher with the date of the class and explain the reason for missing the class. It is the students’ responsibility to catch up with the missed class.
 English is the medium of instruction in this class, but Japanese may be used if necessary.
 Please note that any assignment that is late is subject to a 10% deduction off the mark per day. It is the students’ responsibility to submit the assignment properly on time.  
 Students will receive zero mark for an in-class test if they are absent without notifying the teacher in advance.
 Regarding the use of AI tools in this course, you may use AI tools for brainstorming, for comprehension, and finding new ways to say things. You may not use AI tools for the writing up of entire assignments. Those should be written by you. Failure to do your own work may result in a lower grade or in failing the course.
