授業の目的・方法 /Course Objectives and method |
The main goal of the class is to further develop two important language skills: 1. communication skills, and 2. reading skills. Students will develop strategies for navigating readings -- both fiction for pleasure reading and more difficult non-fiction academic texts. The course seeks to boost students' vocabulary and understanding of words / phrases in context. Reading is one of the language skills which must be learned -- it does not come naturally. With this in mind, this course will focus on extensive free reading in which students do not need to overly rely on a dictionary. In addition, students will also read more challenging academic articles which require more attention to vocabulary and precise meaning. Finally, students will focus on particular reading skills such as skimming, inferring meaning and understanding grammar. In-class the teacher will setup active learning tasks and group work exercises so that students can discuss homework readings with classmates and to check each other's comprehension. |

達成目標 /Course Goals |
By the end of the course students will have expanded their English vocabulary by explaining their reading assignments. Students will sharpen their scanning skills - the ability to quickly find important information and to understand the overall meaning of a text or article. In addition, they will learn how to summarize such findings in their own words. The ultimate goal is to improve reading in English through solitary study, as well as by cooperating with other students in pairs or in group work to clarify the meaning. All such in-class review aims to limit the use of Japanese and be done ideally all in English. |

事前学修・事後学修 /Preparation and review class |
Preparation *Extensive Reading: Students must choose a graded reader from the library (the book must be not too easy nor too hard). Read the book and write a book report. Students should prepare themselves to explain the book contents to other student in class. *Review: Weekly, students should keep a list or notebook of key vocabulary and grammar learned from homework or from in-class exercises. This review aims to help with the students' education as well as for the tests. *I will check to see how much time students take on tasks, especially homework. I aim to keep it to a reasonable 90 minutes or so. However, this depends on individual student proficiency. |

履修上の注意事項 /Remarks |
1. 出席: Most of the speaking practice is done in-class. There are no notes you can copy from classmates. Therefore, attendance is vital to improving English and doing well in the class. 2. AI: Regarding the use of AI tools in this class: You may use AI tools for learning, such as brainstorming, for comprehension, and finding new ways to say things. You may not use AI tools for the writing up of entire assignments, presentations, or research projects. Those should be written by you. Failure to do your own work may result in a lower grade or in failing the course. 3. In this class, you learn English by using it. Teacher feedback comes in the form of red-pen edits & suggestions in submitted essays and test papers. It is vital for learning that students check and understand their mistakes. Also, students can receive feedback on English fluency from classmates during in-class active learning exercises. |
