授業の目的・方法 /Course Objectives and method |
In this course, we will read George Lakoff and Mark Johnson’s seminal book Metaphors we live by to familiarize ourselves with the theory of conceptual metaphor. When we think and communicate, we subconsciously employ various metaphors to match abstract thought to concrete reality. For example, we can say that we spend time, waste time, save time, borrow time, or invest time, as if time was money. This linkage between time and money shapes the way we think about time, reflected in our everyday expressions about time. Not only is conceptual metaphor theory an interesting, thought-provoking topic, but it will also enlarge the student’s insight on how the metaphorical expressions in English and other languages are generated and enhance consciousness on the cognitive mechanisms behind it. | ||
