In this course, we will read A little book of language by David Crystal (2010) to enhance our reading skills, as well as gaining basic knowledge on modern language science.

事前学修・事後学修
/Preparation and review class
The student is expected to read three chapters (approximately ten pages in total) before coming to class. Except for the first class and the final class, there will be a quiz consisting of five short questions to test whether the student has read the chapters.

成績評価の方法
/Grading
The thirteen short quizzes will consist of 60% of the final grade.
The final exam will count for the remaining 40% of the final grade. In the final course, the students will be asked to write a 500-word essay for a given topic related to the book we will have read in class. The grading of the final exam will be based on how well the student has understood the textbook and the clarity of their writing.

履修上の注意事項
/Remarks
In case where the student can provide a justifiable reason for their absence, the quiz not taken during the absent class will not be reflected on the final grade.
