授業の目的・方法
/Course Objectives and method
This course takes a communicative approach to the study of English. Students will be provided with extensive practice in using English as a means of communication. The main objective is to enhance your ability to think and express yourself confidently in English. We will focus primarily on speaking and writing exercises, with an emphasis on building effective communication skills. Learning methods include pair work, group work, and presentations.

• Cultivate your discussion and presentation skills
• Help you become more confident speakers

1. Introduction to the course; The (recent) past and the coming year: making/answering questions
2. Information exchange and a summary of one student’s thoughts (based on the previous week’s questions).
3. Reading of summaries (based on questions in the previous exercise)
4. Infinitives of purpose
5. Infinitives of purpose continued
6. Topics for short talks; practice  
7. Topics for short talks; further practice and preparation for test   
8. Short speaking test
9. Enlivening your sentences with adverbs
10. Cuisine and culture — readings and questions
11. Cuisine and culture — composition and recital
12. Topics for group talks and presentations; preparation
13. Practice for a group speaking test
14. Group speaking test; Presentation tips
15. Final presentations
事前学修・事後学修
/Preparation and review class
It is advisable to prepare for each class in advance and review what you have learned afterwards. Preparation and review will usually involve some reading and writing. On average, you should spend between one and two hours preparing for each class and between one and two hours reviewing material covered in class.

/Grading
Evaluation will be based on participation (25%), speaking tasks (30%), presentations (30%), and written assignments (15%).

/Grading Criteria
In addition to excellent aptitude, students who demonstrate a constant willingness to try their best will receive the highest grades in this course.
秀 (A) 100–90 Outstanding
優 (B) 89–80 Very good
良 (C) 79–70 Good
可 (D) 69–60 Satisfactory
不可 (F) 59–0 Below expectations (failure)

In principle, this course will be conducted face-to-face, and the majority of the classes will be held in the classroom. Some classes may be conducted online.
