授業の目的・方法 /Course Objectives and method |
This course develops students reading, writing and presentation skills through investigating culture. The course has two aims: (i) To develop students' English fluency - especially presentation, discussion and writing skills. (ii) To consider national identity and how it affects intercultural communication. |

達成目標 /Course Goals |
By the end of the course students should have developed their speaking and listening skills in English and be able to understand how culture influences our behaviour and communication. This will be achieved through: - Weekly discussions on aspects of culture - Gathering data on cultural, social, economic and political information of various countries (homework assignments to prepare for class). - Writing assignments examining theoretical and practical aspects of various countries cultures to develop academic writing skills. - Group research project into an aspect of a specific country, presented to the rest of the class during the latter part of the course. |

授業内容 /Course contents |
Lesson Format * Teacher introduces information about culture (20 minutes) * Students present aspects of culture about their country to each other. * Discussions about specific issues related to the topic of the lesson. Week 1 Orientation: What is culture? Week 2 Individual Identity Week 3 National Identity Week 4 Nations and National Groups Week 5 Social Identity and Political Systems Week 6 Individualism v Collectivism Week 7 Food & Drink Week 8 Education systems. Week 9 Gender, Culture & Work Week 10 Religion Week 11 Marriage & family structure Week 12 Work & leisure patterns. Week 13 Art & Music Week 14 Multiculturalism, immigration, citizenship Week 15 Language and Culture; Intercultural communication. |

* Two writing assignments. (About 800 words each) * Weekly research on socio-economic aspects of a particular country * Preparation for group presentation. * Group presentation report. |

Written assignments are graded as follows: * How well the essay answers the essay topic * English fluency and accuracy * Persuasiveness of the argument * How well the essay conforms to academic writing conventions. Presentations are graded as follows: * Successful completion of research task. * English fluency & accuracy * Organisation of the content (how coherent and coherence) * Presentation skills - persuasiveness and use of visual aids. |

* The medium of instruction of this course is English - there are Japanese versions of some of the written materials, but all class discussions and written work are in English.
