授業の目的・方法
/Course Objectives and method
This course is an introduction to reading American fiction using the themes of making
choices, mystery and the role of fate. Students will study basic literary terms, idioms and
expressions, and complete comprehension exercises. In addition, students will discuss setting
characters, plot, themes and conflict. Finally , they will practice answering questions that
encourage analysis of the story. Finally, they will identify the emotional element that drive
character decision making.

/Course Goals
Students will:
a) Develop and understanding of different narrative themes within fiction and analyze the
author’s purpose. Write weekly papers to confirm the materials covered have been integrated
into students’ understanding.
b) Gain weekly speaking experience through reading aloud.
c) Understand literary terms and how writers employ them.

/Preparation and review class
The students are encouraged to practice reading the
stories aloud as reading for fluency is not only a goal of the course but part of the assessment.

成績評価の方法
/Grading
a) The teacher will observe the student weekly and make notes in on-going assessment
based on their ability to read aloud smoothly.
b) Students will write weekly book reports, which will be graded. The style of the book
report will be taught in class and should be closely followed.

100-90
Student participates at a level that sets an example to others. Writing assignments scores are
consistently high demonstrating knowledge of the tasks and comprehension. Full attendance.
Student speaks clearly and audibly in speaking tasks.
89-80 Student participates at a level that sets an example to others. Writing assignments
scores are mostly high demonstrating knowledge of the tasks and comprehension. Full
attendance. Student speaks clearly and audibly in speaking tasks.
79-70
Student does the required work but the level of engagement is inconsistent between
superficial and satisfactory. Sometimes or often misinterprets the text and literary aspects.
Most often does not really understand writer’s purpose (theme).
69-60
Student does required work but the level of engagement is superficial.
59 (Fail)
Student fails to participate on appropriate attendance, and in class activities.

Reading and understanding literature contributes to a students understanding
of the work as they, the learner, has to see the world through the eyes of others, notably the
author, and the characters. This happens in ways outside of their own experience. As a result,
new experiences can be integrated as texts of this kind always contain ethical and emotional
elements that demand readers’ attention.
