授業の目的・方法 /Course Objectives and method |
This course will investigate the syntax and semantics of quantifiers from cross-linguistic perspectives. All natural languages have ways to represent quantification. However, it appears that the way of representations differs from language to language. For example, in Japanese, to represent the situation described in the English sentence (1), there are at least three ways, as shown in (2)-(4). (1) All the cats ran away. (2) Subete-no neko-ga nigedashita. [all-gen cat-nom ran.away] (3) Neko subete-ga nigedashita. [cat all-nom ran.away] (4) Neko-ga subete nigedashita. [cat-nom all ran.away] How can we analyze the difference between Japanese and English? Can all the variants in Japanese in (2)-(4) be analyzed in a unified fashion? Are there any languages that show similar quantificational patterns to Japanese or English? Are there any languages that show different quantificational patterns from both Japanese and English? If any, how can we analyze such languages? We will explore these questions not merely from descriptive points, but from theoretical aspects. |

成績評価の基準 /Grading Criteria |
Homework assignments and the final take-home exam are graded based on your answers and your explanations for your answers. Answers without explanations will not be accepted. Carefully explain, in your own words, why and how you came up with your answer. The final paper is graded based on how well you have understood the course content and how well you have applied what you have learned in the course. Your final grade will be based on the total score: A(秀): 100-90 Excellent performance on the requirements of the class B(優): 89-80 Good performance on the requirements of the class C(良): 79-70 Acceptable performance on the requirements of the class D(可): 69-60 Minimally acceptable performance on the requirements of the class F(不可): 59-0 Unacceptable performance on the requirements of the class |
