授業の目的・方法 /Course Objectives and method |
The focus of this course is topic-based conversations, where students will practice English in pairs and groups for personalized and learner-centered interaction. Particular attention will be paid to how students actively use English and focus on developing discussion strategies in real time. Students will build extensively on their existing vocabulary, and through weekly exercises improve their pronunciation. The use of multimedia and interactive course material specifically designed by the tutor will enable a fun yet academically rigorous course. The lessons will be conducted real-time by in-person lectures or Zoom (subject to change in circumstances). |

(i) develop the conversation strategies needed for effective English communication in everyday situations, with attention given to interrogatives and explaining your thoughts and ideas in detail. (ii) practice the vocabulary, grammar, and functions encountered most often in real life. (iii) demonstrate confidence in communicating in English, through clear and effective self-expression. (iv) develop speaking fluency through group and personalized activities on contemporary topics. (v) develop fluency and confidence in writing and speaking through writing practice and oral presentations. (vi) To collate and submit two portfolios of projects, quizzes, assignments, and presentations conducted in class or as homework. |
授業内容 /Course contents |
Most weeks will involve a detailed discussion exercise on relevant and dynamic topics. Week 1: Orientation: Introduce the course structure, expectations and goals. Explaining and describing place and things. Week 2: Discussion on Friendships. Discussion Strategy: rejoinders and follow up questions. Grammar and Vocabulary: past simple, present perfect, personality traits. Week 3: Discussion on Memories. Discussion Strategy: giving detailed answers. Grammar and Vocabulary: used to, I am getting used to/words for describing emotions. Week 4: Discussion on Goals. Discussion Strategy: Asking for and giving clarification. Grammar and Vocabulary: future forms and the zero conditional/ vocabulary expressing desire and dislikes. Week 5: Discussion on Age and Discrimination. Discussion Strategy: expressing your opinion, contributing to the discussion. Grammar and Vocabulary: reflexive pronouns and the second conditional/ describing the aging process. PORTFOLIO Weeks 1-5 Week 6: Discussion on the Environment. Discussion Strategy: interrupting politely. Grammar and Vocabulary: Present continuous passive; infinitive passive, linking words/ natural science vocabulary. Week 7: Design and Present an Action Plan to Protect the Environment. Discussion Strategies: making Suggestions. GROUP CLASS PRESENTATION. Week 8: Discussion on Culture. Discussion Strategy: connecting your ideas to others. Grammar and Vocabulary: second conditional and past modals for hypothetical situations. Language used for polite or impolite behavior, and expectations. Week 9: Discussion on Poverty. Discussion Strategy: agreeing and disagreeing with others. Grammar and Vocabulary: causative get and have/ words and phrases to describe poverty and wealth. PORTFOLIO Weeks 6-9 Week 10: Discussion on Gender Roles. Discussion Strategy: making a suggestion and coming to a conclusion. Grammar and Vocabulary: reported statements/language to describe identity. Week 11: Design and Present a Report on Gender Issues in Japan. GROUP CLASS PRESENTATION. Week 12: Read and Understand Three News Articles. In groups of three, students will read a newspaper article, and use discussion strategies taught in class, to explain and elicit answers. Grammar and Vocabulary: embedded questions. Week 13: Listen and Understand Three Read Texts. In groups of three, students will listen to an audio track and use discussion strategies taught in class, to explain and elicit answers. Week 14: Watch and Understand Three Video Shorts. In groups of three, students watch a video short and use discussion strategies taught in class, to explain and elicit answers. Week 15: Discussion Exercise. Select a unique topic online and use discussion strategies to explain and elicit information. Week 16: End of Term Exam. SPEAKING or WRITING TEST. |
