授業の目的・方法
/Course Objectives and method
This course is an introduction to reading American fiction using the themes of making choices, mystery and the role of fate. Students will study basic literary terms, idioms and expressions, and complete comprehension exercises. In addition, students will discuss characters, plot, themes and conflict. Finally , they will practice answering questions that encourage analysis of the story.

Students will:
a) Develop and understanding of different narrative themes within fiction and analyze the author’s purpose.
b) gain weekly experience reading aloud.
c) Understand literary terms and how writers employ them.

The students are encouraged to practice reading the stories aloud as reading for fluency is not only a goal of the course but part of the assessment.

成績評価の方法
/Grading
a) The teacher will observe the student weekly and make notes in on-going assessment based on their ability to read aloud smoothly.
b) Students will write two book reports, one mid-term and a final.  The style of the book report will be taught in class and should be closely followed.

100-90

Student’s English level is already at a usable intermediate level.  Student follows the guidelines of the course in oral and written work.  Students enunciation is good.  Students written work demonstrates an analysis of the text and its intended meaning. 


89-80

Student English level is a communicative level and this is noticeable in both oral and written communication.  The written work produced is less developed.  



79-70

Student reads most frequently used words smoothly but mispronounces less frequently used words.  Student demonstrates an understanding of the text and questions but also makes comprehension errors. 


69-60

Student participates when prompted but reads aloud without using appropriate intonation and mispronounces frequently used words.


59 (Fail)

Student fails to participate on appropriate attendance, and in class activities.
