授業の目的・方法 /Course Objectives and method |
This course is an intermediate reading class. The objective is to increase the students’ ability to read and understand written materials in the English language. A lot of written material is delivered in short but dense written style, so this course will focus on written examples that are short and dense. This will help prepare students to pass the Eiken level pre-1 test as well as prepare them to read abstracts, newspaper articles, and e-mail correspondence. Classes will be real time on Zoom with instructions posted on Manaba. |
達成目標 /Course Goals |
The course goal is for students to reach a reading level where they will be able to pass Eiken level pre-1 tests. The students should develop an expanded vocabulary at the 10,000-word level. Students will be able to understand how short readings are organized so that they can improve their ability to comprehend the information quickly. The course will also focus on complex sentence structures: sentences with multiple dependent and independent clauses, relative pronouns, and other language features. |

Students should prepare for lessons by reading the short essays before we read them in class. There will be 24 review quizzes. Students will be expected to review the essays before the quizzes in their own time. |

成績評価の方法 /Grading |
There will be 24 review quizzes and a final exam. Class participation will also be a factor in determining the final grade. Class participation means participating in discussions in class or on Zoom. It also includes contributing to Forum discussions on Manaba. The quizzes will be based on the reading assignments. The final exam will include a reading passage the students have not seen before. |

Reading is an important skill needed to succeed in today’s challenging international labor market. Reading also opens the door into the minds of other people, and allows us to communicate our deepest thoughts and most difficult concepts. Students are expected to take this course seriously, put in effort, and attend class regularly. The rewards for improving reading ability are many fold, These include scoring higher on Eiken and TOEIC tests, accessing online news articles quickly and understanding them fully, increasing vocabulary, and learning about the world in which we live. |
