授業の目的・方法 /Course Objectives and method |
* Some classes will be led by Prof. Ryota Moriya according to the weekly topic. * The theme of this course is intercultural communication. The course explores a number of features that underlie communicative interaction, in particular, culture, identity and language. * Each lesson is based on a chapter of the main textbook. In class the instructor consolidates and extends the theme, followed by class discussions. * Students will also carry out a research project connected with intercultural communication in teams in collaboration with a student from the University of Malaya. Each team gives two presentations on their research: Presentation 1: Research objectives; Presentation 2: Research findings. A project schedule and plan is provided in the first class. * Students will also write two 1,000 word essays in English on topics decided by the instructor related to issues in intercultural communication. |

達成目標 /Course Goals |
The goal of the course is to enable students to better understand the interplay between language and culture and how the different cultural expectations of different groups affect intercultural communication. Specifically: * How do cultural norms affect the way that people interact with each other, * How are these norms manifested through the linguistic and behavioral choices they make? Culture is investigated from a number of different perspectives according to the various discourse communities to which we all belong and the different identities we present during a given interaction: our nationality, our social group, our gender, our physical ability or disability, or our role in a particular situation. Language is investigated in terms of the pragmatic choices we make to suit a particular discourse situation and our communication objectives. |
