| 授業の目的・方法 ／Course Objectives and method |
Students work with various texts doing different activities before, during, and after their reading to develop basic reading comprehension skills. To support English language acquisition, they will increase their vocabulary, knowledge of idioms, learn how to read numbers and other common symbols, learn to recognize thought units of English in the texts, and gain improved reading skills through intensive and extensive reading. For intensive reading students will use a variety of teacher selected and student selected content-based readings as well as samples of simple texts from everyday life. This course will be a blend of intensive reading in real time using Zoom and extensive free reading on demand using a paid online virtual library and learner management system (LMS) for independent reading at each student's level. |

Students will be able to -paraphrase sentences -summarize information -read aloud and use number and symbol expressions used in a variety of written information formats; -use a variety of reading pre-reading, in-reading, and post-reading strategies -formulate discussion and comprehension questions based on a reading -express opinions about the readings -show an improving ability to increase their reading speed as they learn to cluster, to read in thought groups, rather than word for word. -show some appreciation of reading for knowledge, vocabulary by finding short articles matching their interests to share with a reading group |

The teacher will provide the Intensive Reading materials for Weeks 1 to 10; Weeks 11 to 14 students will provide readings. Extensive Reading materials can be found in the XReading (online virtual library) or OUC library online list; students must buy a \1,500 user card for a 6-month contract with Xreading. | ||

| 成績評価の基準 ／Grading Criteria |
Students must attend the Intensive Reading Zoom sessions and participate to get full credit. Extensive Reading evaluation is based on the number of words read and a 70% quiz score for each book: 84,000+words = 75%; 100,000+words = 80%; 120,000+words =90%. Students who attend regularly, scomplete assignments, peak English, and read over 120,000 will get 秀. |

| 履修上の注意事項 ／Remarks |
Weekly Zoom sessions will be limited to about 1 hour with group discussion time included. Students should have a reliable internet connection for the zoom sessions. Computers are preferred. During the class sessions, students must be in a quiet place, alone, without distractions and with videos on showing your faces. Get used to it now because teleconferencing is here to stay, and it will be a part of your student life and future work life. The language of the class is English. Students are expected to do their best to speak English with each other and with the teacher. Students must buy an Xreading card for \1500 for unlimited use for 6 months. |
