授業の目的・方法 /Course Objectives and method |
Increasing awareness of essay types and structure through writing short essays on a topic chosen by the teacher. Each essay will focus on the topic from a distinct perspective. The course aims at developing students’ Academic English writing skills. Students will need to create a Google account. Homework will be submitted through Google docs. |

The goal is to enhance students’ ability to formulate statements of purpose, to use appropriate citation, text connectives, paragraphing, and punctuation. | ||
授業内容 /Course contents |
1. Orientation 2-5 Unit 1: From presentation to essay In this unit students will make presentations about the topic and view presentations made by colleagues. The presentations will serve as base for two essays an expository essay based on the student’s own presentation and a compare and contrast essay in which students compare their work with that of another student. 6-9 Unit 2: Survey report In this unit students will learn how to make a questionnaire, how to analyze the data collected; how to write a report based on the questionnaire data. 10-13 Unit 3: Using literature In this unit students will learn how to write literature review. The unit will include: 10) finding appropriate literature 11) writing an abstract 12) quoting 13) writing a review 14) writing the reference list Unit 4: 15) Writing a longer essay: Students will use the materials created in Units1-3 to write the outline for a longer essay. |

Grading will reflect the degree of achievement of goals a-c as follows: 100-90: exceptional contribution to the class 89-80: strong performance 79-70: meets expectations 69-60: meets expectations with support 59-0: performs below expectations Goals: (a) mastering the concepts and methods introduced during the course (b) doing the required research and writing (c) teamwork |
