授業の目的・方法 /Course Objectives and method |
The purpose of this course is to make you aware of good strategies for reading. You should choose appropriate strategies to apply when you read. This course is also intended to help students become more comfortable reading and writing in English. The text emphasizes types of paragraph organization. Students read models of each type and consider the relationships among pieces of information in the paragraphs. |

達成目標 /Course Goals |
The goal of this class is to teach students about the organization of English paragraphs from the point of view of both readers and writers. This includes helping students learn to find the main idea of a paragraph and analyze how the ideas are related and organized. In addition, we will learn about American culture as well as the cultures of other countries. | ||
授業内容 /Course contents |
Course Introduction In this class, the students will introduce each other and the teacher will be introduce the course. There will be a short survey in this class. Pre-reading activities In this class, you will study the differences of English and Japanese writing style. You will also study what is needed before you read a paper, such as scheme-building activities. Main Ideas and Topic Sentences Each essay and each paragraph has its own main idea, stated in the topic sentence. You will study how to recognize these in this class. Skimming and Scanning Skimming, looking over a writing very quickly to understand what it is about, and scanning, looking quickly for a certain word or phrase in a writing, are important in reading English. You will study these techniques in this class. Paragraph Organization In this class, you will study the organization of paragraphs. Transitions and different kinds of paragraphs In this class, you will study the different kinds of transition words used for different types of essay and the teacher will introduce different types of expository paragraphs. Descriptive Paragraphs In this class, you will study paragraphs that describe things, places, or people. Narrative Paragraphs In this class, you will study paragraphs that tell about an event. Personal Opinion Paragraphs In this class, you will study paragraphs that state someone's personal opinion. Classification Paragraphs In this class, you will study paragraphs that classify certain things into categories. Cause and Effect Paragraphs In this class, you will study paragraphs that describe the cause and effect of something. Comparison and Contrast Paragraphs In this class, you will study paragraphs that compare, contrast, and compare and contrast things, places, or people. Problem-Solution Paragraphs In this class, you will study paragraphs that describe how a solution can be made for a problem. Final Test Results of final test. |
